About Mr Ben Hornung

Mr Ben Hornung is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon, practising at Spire Manchester Hospital and The Alexandra Hospital. He is the lead for colorectal cancer at his NHS practice, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (Manchester Royal Infirmary), which is a tertiary referral centre and one of the UK’s leading trusts.

He delivers patient-centred care, building his relationships on trust and ongoing, clear communication. He offers diagnosis, treatment and surgery for general and colorectal conditions including haemorrhoids, anal fissure/fistula, pilonidal sinus, hernias, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disease, diverticular disease and bowel cancer.

Mr Hornung has published widely and presented at both national and international meetings. He is also actively involved in research and recruiting patients to a number of national multi-centre clinical trials.

With more than 20 years’ of medical experience, he specialises in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgery for a wide range of general and colorectal conditions.

His patient-centred approach, combined with his expertise in minimally invasive keyhole and robotic surgery, ensures the best possible outcomes for all of his patients.

After qualifying in 2003 and completing his basic surgical training in Yorkshire, he undertook a period of clinical research at the University Hospital of South Manchester investigating the pathophysiology of pelvic floor disorders.

He then completed his higher surgical training in the North West, gaining expertise in general and colorectal surgery at all the major tertiary centres. His specialist interest is in minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery, and he undertook a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Yorkshire prior to taking up his consultant post.
